Specimen Required: | Patient Preparation: None required. Collect: Red Top Tube OR Serum Separator Tube (SST) OR Green (Sodium Heparin) – 0.5 ml serum or plasma. Specimen Preparation: Follow all precaution for handling biological material. Use all appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). 1. For Serum Separator Tube (SST) a. Allow blood to clot at 18-25C for 30 min, and separate from gel within 24 hours. 2. For Red Top tube (no anticoagulant) a. Allow blood to clot completely at 18-25C for 30-60 mins, immediately centrifuge and separate serum from cells. 3. For Green top tube (heparinized) a. Centrifuge and separate plasma from cells. Transfer serum from Red or Plasma from Green in a Standard Transfer Tube. Storage/Transport Temperature: Refrigerated If sent to ACCU Reference Medical Labs as whole blood in 24 hours, sample will be centrifuged on arrival. Stability: After separation from blood cells a. Stable when refrigerated (2-8˚C) – 7 days b. Stable for 30 days when frozen at -80˚C. Reject Criteria: – Unseparated whole blood sample within 24 hours – Hemolyzed and lipemic specimens – Sample that is mislabeled, mismatched or no patient identifiers – Sample without a test request – Any broken or damaged tubes – Specimens collected in the incorrect tubes. – Specimen received outside of stability requirements.
