Specimen Required: | Collect: Throat Bacterial, Culturette/Swab (Long Swab) OR E-Swab. Specimen Preparation: Obtain specimen from the Pharynx. Specimen must be obtained before antimicrobial therapy has been administered. Method: a) Place gentle pressure on the tongue with a tongue depress or. b) Extend the swab between the tonsillar pillars and behind the uvula, avoiding the tongue, buccal mucosa, and uvula. c) Sweep the swab back and forth across the posterior pharynx, tonsillar are as, and any inflamed or exudative are as. NOTE: Do not obtain specimen if the epiglottis is in flamed, since sampling may trigger life threatening respiratory obstruction. Storage/Transport Temperature: Refrigerated.
