Specimen Required: | Collect: Blue-top (sodium citrate) tube – Whole blood. Specimen Preparation: Blood should be collected in a blue-top tube containing 3.2% buffered sodium citrate. Fill to the proper level, indicated by a fill line on the tube. Tubes must be at least 90 % full. DO NOT OVER-FILL OR UNDERFILL COLLECTION TUBE. The sample should be mixed immediately by gentle inversion at least six times to ensure adequate mixing of the anticoagulant with the blood. Centrifuge blood samples for 15 minutes. Plasma must be free of platelets. Freeze immediately and ship on dry ice. Storage/Transport Temperature: Room Temperature. Stability: Unopened light blue-top tube: Room temperature: 48 hours; Refrigerated: Unacceptable; Frozen: Unacceptable Separated platelet poor plasma: Room temperature: Unacceptable; Refrigerated: Unacceptable; Frozen: 14 days Specimen Rejection Criteria • Underfilled tubes (< 90 % full) • Incorrect anticoagulant or anticoagulant ratio (e.g.,>3.2% trisodium citrate or EDTA, etc.) • Clotted specimens • Specimen received with mismatched or no patient identifiers. • Specimen received outside of stability requirements.
