Specimen Required: | Preferred Specimen(s): Swab of an urogenital (vaginal, cervical, urethral swabs or secretions) specimen OR 1 mL respiratory (sputum, bronchial washing, trancheobronchial secretions, bronchoalveolar lavage, nasopharyngeal or throat swabs) sample OR 1 mL sterile fluid or tissue submitted in VCM transport medium. Alternative Specimen(s): Random urine, centrifuged and the pellet submitted in VCM or M4 transport medium OR swab of urogenital specimen submitted in M4 transport medium OR 1 mL of sterile fluid submitted in M4 transport medium OR tissue submitted in M4 transport medium. M4 transport medium is acceptable. Rayon, calcium alginate, or cotton swabs with either aluminum or plastic shafts are acceptable. Specimen Preparation: Submit swab, fluid, tissue or exudate in VCM transport medium. All specimens must be submitted in mycoplasma transport. Storage/Transport Temperature: Refrigerate. Stability: Room Temperature: Unacceptable; Refrigerated: 48 hours; Frozen: 30 days; Frozen: -20C is Unacceptable. Remark: Wooden shafted swabs can be toxic to these organisms and will be rejected. THE ROOM TEMPERATURE FORMULA CANNOT BE USED FOR MYCOPLASMA.
