Specimen Required: | Collect: EDTA (lavender-top) tube OR sodium heparin (royal blue-top) tube- 0.5 ml RBC cells Alternative Specimens: EDTA (lavender-top) tube, EDTA (royal blue-top) tube, or sodium heparin (royal blue-top) tube – 1 ml whole blood Specimen Preparation: – Packed RBC’s: Centrifuge specimen and discard plasma within two hours of collection. Transfer RBC’s to a plastic Trace-element and metal-free transport tube transfer vial. – Whole blood: Do not centrifuge whole blood. Storage/Transport Temperature: Refrigerated. Stability: – Packed RBC cells: Room temperature: 7 days; Refrigerated: 7 days: Frozen: Unacceptable – Whole blood: Room temperature: 4 days; Refrigerated: 7 days; Frozen: Unacceptable Causes for Rejection: Specimens collected in tubes other then Royal Blue (EDTA) OR EDTA (Lavender-Top) Tube.
