Specimen Required: | Collect: Lavender (EDTA) Top Tube – 2-4 ml Whole blood Specimen Preparation: Use all appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Samples must be inverted 10-15 times after collection and re-inverted just prior to use. Labeling: Label with the patient’s first and last name plus a second identifier such as date of birth, specimen ID or medical record number. Storage/Transport Temperature: EDTA whole blood samples must be transported and stored at room temperature (15°C to 25°C) to reach the lab within 48 hours and may be stored refrigerated for up to 5 days (2 °C to 8 °C) for long term. In hot weather a cool pack should be enclosed from the time of collection and transport. Stability: Room Temperature: 48 hours; Refrigerated: 5 days Remark: • DO NOT shake blood sample tubes vigorously. • Hemolyzed plasma and serum samples have a pink/red tint due to broken red blood cells. Avoid hemolysis by using proper sample collection and handing techniques. •Avoid clotted samples by inverting blood tube appropriately immediately after filling. Redraw any clotted hematology samples. Specimen Rejection Criteria: 1. Frozen, hemolyzed, or clotted samples. 2. Any sample that is mislabeled (unlabeled specimen or name discrepancy between specimen and request label). 3. Specimen in expired transport container. 4. Specimen received after prolonged delay (5 days or more after collection date). 5. Any sample without a test requisition /consent. 6.
