Methodology: | Inductively Coupled Plasma/Mass Spectrometry (ICP/MS) |
Performed: | Varies |
Reported: | 3-5 days |
Specimen Required: | Patient Preparation: Disinfectants (such as Betadine) that contain iodine should not be used during venipuncture. High concentrations of gadolinium and iodine are known to interfere with most metals tests. If either gadolinium or iodine containing contrast media has been administered, a specimen should not be collected for 96 hours. Collect: Royal Blue (trace metal-free) EDTA tube – 0.5 ml. plasma. Specimen Preparation: Sample should be transported to the laboratory in a Styrofoam box that is filled with ice 2-8°C in 24 hours. OR Separate plasma from cells and transport plasma into a transport tube. Storage/Transport Temperature: Refrigerated (2-8°C). Stability: After separation of cells: Refrigerated: 1 week. Specimen Rejection Criteria: Specimens other than plasma, specimens that are not separated from red cells in 24 hours, or specimens that are clotted, samples without two identifiers.
