Specimen Required: | Collect: Swab in Amie’s or Star Swab® transport medium (Long Swab) OR E-Swab Specimen Preparation: Specimen collected at 35 to 37 week of gestation from vagina and rectum. Use universal precautions for collecting and handling all specimens. Please inform the laboratory if patient is allergic to Penicillin. Storage/Transport Temperature: Room Temperature Stability: Long Swab/E-Swab: Room Temperature: 72 hours. Criteria of Rejection: Cervical Specimen or any other body site. Swab in formalin or PVA Swab in 4M transport medium. REMARK : Indicate a specimen source The CDC and the ACOG recommend reflex susceptibility testing to clindamycin and erythromycin (D-zone test to detect inducible clindamycin resistance) for group B Streptococcus only for those patients at high risk for anaphylactic shock due to penicillin allergy.
