Specimen Required: | Collect: Clean-voided midstream urine. Specimen Collection: Personal Protective equipment must be used for this procedure. Have the patient collect voided urine directly into a disposable leak proof container, instructing the patient to not halt and restart the urinary stream for a midstream collection but preferably move the container in to the path of the already voiding urine. Transport device(s): 1. Sterile urine cup, >1ml, refrigerated. 2. Urine culture boric acid preservative transport tube. (e.g., BD Vacutainer Plus C&S Preservative Tubes -Grey tube), room temperature or refrigerated. Storage/Transport Temperature: Refrigerated Stability: Specimens collected in a sterile container should be transported to the laboratory within 2 hours if not preserved. 1. Refrigeration for up to 24 hours is acceptable without preservation. 2. Room Temperature or Refrigerated for up to 48 hours is acceptable for preservative transport tube. Freezing is not acceptable. Specimen rejection criteria: 1. Unpreserved and/or urine specimen with no evidence of refrigeration with more than 2 hours between collection and delivery. 2. 24-hour urine collections are not suitable for culture. 3. Urine from catheter bags is not suitable for culture. 4. Urine specimens from leaky containers are not acceptable. 5. The specimen must be properly labeled (at least 2 unique identifiers). 6.
