| Specimen Required: | Patient Preparation: Acute (at onset of illness) or convalescent specimen should be noted on tube Collect: Serum Separator Tube (SST) OR Plain Red – 0.5 ml serum. Specimen Preparation: Collect all blood samples using acceptable phlebotomy techniques. Follow all precaution for handling biological material. Use all appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Allow SST to clot in an upright position for at least 30 minutes, then centrifuge sample within 2 hours of collection. Storage/Transport Temperature: Refrigerated Stability: Refrigerated at 2-8ºC: 5 days; Frozen at -20oC: 30 days Unacceptable Conditions: 1. Any sample that is mislabeled, mismatched or no patient identifiers 2. Any sample without a test request 3. Any broken or damaged tubes 4. Specimens collected in the incorrect tubes. 5. Specimen received outside of stability requirements. Do not use bacterially contaminated, hemolyzed, or lipemic samples.
