Specimen Required: | Collect: Universal Transport Medium (UTM), saline, or E-swab for collection of nasopharyngeal swabs. Specimen Preparation: 1. Wash hands with soap and water and done personal protective equipment. 2. Remove the swab from its packaging, holding by the and of the applicator and identify the breaking point. 3. Position head slightly back. 4. Gently insert the swab into the nostril. Keep the swab near the septum floor of the nose while gently pushing the swab into the post nasopharynx. As a visual reference, the swab should be inserted about half the distance from the opening of the patient’s nostril and the ear. 5. When the swab is in place, rotate in a circular motion gently against the nasopharyngeal mucosa for 10-15 seconds then gently remove swab. 6. While holding the swab, remove the cap from the tube. • Insert the swab into the tube until the breakpoint is level with the tube opening. • Bend the swab shaft at a 180 degrees angle to break it off at the breaking point. You may need to gently rotate the swab shaft to complete the breakage. 7. Discard the broken part of the applicator into an approved waste disposal container. 8. Screw the cap back into the tube and apply patient identification label or write patient information on the tube label. 9. Wash hands with soap and water. Storage/Transport Temperature: Refrigerated Stability: Refrigerated 5 days Specimen rejection criteria: 1. Mislabeled samples (unlabeled specimen or name discrepancy between specimen and request label). 2. Specimen in expired transport container. 3. Specimen received after prolonged delay (unrefrigerated). 4. Specimens not collected or handled according to the swab collection device manufacturer’s recommended procedures. 5. Sample without a test requisition. 6. Specimen in non sterile/unpreserved/leaking container/Any broken or damaged tubes. 7.
