Specimen Required: | Patient Preparation: No special preparation of the patient is required. Collect: K2EDTA (spray dry EDTA) OR K3EDTA (liquid form of EDTA) anti-coagulated whole blood Lavender venous or capillary specimens. Specimen Preparation: Follow all precaution for handling biological material. Use all appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Collected samples standing for hours should be inverted to move the RBC from the bottom then mixed to improve and equilibrate the homogeneity of the sample. Mix blood samples at least 8 times by hand inversion. Alternately, use a mechanical mixer for at least 5 minutes. Vortex capillary specimen for 3 seconds then inverted 3-5 times to insuread equate mixing. Storage/Transport Temperature: Refrigearated. Stability: After separation of cells: Room Temperature: 24 hours; Refrigerated: 48 hours at 2 to 8°C Rejection Criteria: Specimens collected in the incorrect tubes. Specimens received with mismatched or no patient identifiers. Specimen received outside of stability requirements. Hemolysis Clotted Specimen Specimen diluted with IV fluid Poured off transfer tubes (whole blood) Components: WBC; RBC; Hemoglobin; Hematocrit; MCV; MCH; MCHC; Platelets; MPV.
