Specimen Required: | Patient Preparation: Recommended to fast at least 12 hours prior to blood draw. Collect: Serum Separator Tube (SST) OR Red Top Tube OR Sodium Heparin Plasma – 0.5 ml serum or plasma. Specimen Preparation: Follow all precaution for handling biological material. Use all appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Allow blood to clot completely at room temperature (20-26°C) for 30-60 minutes, centrifuge for 10 to 15 min. Transfer separated serum from Red Top Tube or plasma to a plastic transport tube and protect from light. Storage/Transport Temperature: Refrigearated. Stability: After separation of cells: Refrigerated: 7 days (2-8˚C), Frozen: 2 weeks (-20˚C). Rejection Criteria: Specimens collected in the incorrect tubes. Specimens received with mismatched or no patient identifiers. Specimen received outside of stability requirements. Whole blood. Not light protected. Remark: β-caroteneis a precursor to vitamin A.
