Basic Metabolic Profile

Specimen Required:Patients Preparation: Prior to sample collection, an 8-12 hour fast is recommended but not required for the patient.

Collect: Serum Separator Tube (SST).  

Specimen Preparation: Use all appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
Allow blood samples to clot (15 mins). Separate the serum from the cells by
centrifuging for 10 minutes to minimize loss of glucose through glycolysis.
Storage/Transport Temperature: Refrigerated.
Stability: After separation of cells:  Refrigerated: 3 days; Frozen 2 weeks
Rejection Criteria: Any sample that is mislabeled; Any broken or damaged tubes.
